Upcoming Classes at Unity Temple

Writing Workshop, Monday, March 25, 2019, 3:30pm - 5:30pm, Classroom B. Sometimes dreams do come true.  Pat Berge’s dream is to bring storytelling and writing alive to small, intimate circles.  Pat, while studying for her MFA under Professor John Schultz at Columbia College, Chicago, found John had a dream, too.

It came alive in workshops of up to10 students at a time, sitting in a circle.  Students were coached to see a moment happening in a place in their minds, and then tell that story to the group. Once stories flow around and across the circle, they can easily be captured on the page or the screen. This became the Story Workshop Method.

Pat Berge now offers that possibility to you. Storytellers and writers can tell their way into journals, letters, poems, or just a note to a good friend.

Deepening Practice: Half-day Silent Retreat, Saturday, March 30, 2019, 9:00am - 1:00pm. Whether you are an advanced practitioner, simply wanting to enrich your current understanding or are brand new to meditation, join us Saturday as we explore ways in which we may deepen our practice and bring more peace and happiness to our world.

We've realized that the mantra, "the simpler the better" rings true for Deepening Practice, so every LAST SATURDAY of the month at Unity Temple you will find an opportunity for a 4-hour Silent Retreat. There will be brief introduction and a bell to signal alternating times of walking/sitting, but very little spoken guidance throughout the retreat. Along with that, Victor and other meditation teachers will be on hand, and available for 1-1 consultations during the retreat, if you want to take some time to process your experience, or ask questions about your personal meditation and mindfulness practice.

We hope many of you will make time to attend part or all of this 4-hour retreat.

U-Thrive: Alchemy of the Instincts - Enneagram Seminar, Wednesday, April 3, 2019, 6:30pm - 9:00pm, Temple SPACE. A study of the instinctual variants and how we prioritize our time, attention, and energy differently based on them. Within the Enneagram community, there is a growing body of knowledge and awareness around how we each prioritize 3 basic survival instincts: (1) our self preservation instinct, (2) our social instinct, and (3) our sexual instinct.

Learn different theories surrounding how our respective "instinctual variants" within the Enneagram system help to explain why different people prioritize their lives so differently. Gain a sense of the "alchemy" of our "dominant" and/or middle instincts" impacts how our Enneagram Type shows up in the world. Learn about "countertypes" and how mistyping can occur because of these countertypes.

This is a great course for increasing self awareness as well as promoting greater compassion and understanding for others. Knowledge of your Enneagram Type is recommended but not required.

Suggested love offering: $25-30 (no one turned away)

Engaging Mindfulness Meditation Practice Group, Saturday, April 13, 2019, 9:30am - 12:30pm, Classroom C. This is a unique meditation group, in that we also practice dialogue during our time together. This is a unique meditation group, in that we also practice dialogue during our time together. Not “social dialogue” where you may or may not click with the person(s) you speak with, or you might want to have the right thing to say. Meditative dialogue: Between silent meditation and the speed we move and speak of our every day world is a place we can practice meditative dialogue. Meditative dialogue might be explained as a grounded awareness where we can practice using speech, yet what we actually say isn’t important.  What is important is our awareness, what we noticed, what we chose to speak and what we didn’t.  This dialogue has nothing to do with a story we have been telling our friends.  Each moment may be different.  It is about experience.

As the listener, we practice bringing ourselves back to awareness and listening without an agenda.  We are so used to listening to offer advice, reassurance, empathy, teaching, etc…these are all agendas. Listening is one of the greatest gifts we can offer another person, and we cannot fully listen with and agenda. What I have noticed after being in dialogue with others is a comfortable closeness even if I don’t know much about them and after practicing dialogue in a monthly group, I remember again how I want to listen more closely, and how I want to slow down and connect with myself and others while I am speaking.

As with most groups, we practice silent meditation, have a dharma topic, and have time as a group to debrief and ask questions.

If you have any questions feel free to call Lori @ 816-516-2200. Lori is a meditation student, Unity Minister, Nonviolent Communication Trainer, and supports others on their journeys. This group meets monthly on the 2nd Saturday.

All meditation levels welcome. No prior experience necessary. Come experience connection as part of your meditation experience.

Suggested Love Offering $25 (no one turned away for lack of funds)

Courageous Conversations, Sunday, April 14, 2019, 12:30pm - 2:00pm, Manse Living Room. The Courageous Conversations Group’s mission is to speak Truth to power through conscious dialogue that will lead to greater diversity and inclusivity within and outside of the church walls. In other words, the aim is to create—from the inside-out--a world that works for everyone. This initiative was started in 2016 by Rev. Sandra Campbell and a small group of thoughtful, committed congregants aiming to create sacred space for people of diverse views to engage in thought-provoking, heart-opening, mind-expanding, and often uncomfortable conversations on topics that are often difficult and controversial. The group believes that only when we are courageous enough to be uncomfortable can we hope to be the change we want to see in the world.  If you are one of those thoughtful, committed people, come join the conversation!

Meets Monthly on the 2nd and 4th Sunday

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” ~ Margaret Mead
